Sensitivity to cold: women more frequently affected than men

Sensitivity to cold is a common phenomenon in both men and women. Women generally have a lower muscle mass, which leads to a comparatively lower basal metabolic rate of energy and therefore less heat production. As a result, they feel cold more strongly than men. Although men have the same problems, they generally do not feel the cold as strongly as women.

It is unclear why this feeling of discomfort is so much more prevalent in women, but some theories suggest that it is linked to lifestyle and general health. Regardless of gender, however, it is important to take steps to keep warm during the colder months of the year. However, it is also important to know that even seasoned and stocky men can also suffer from cold sensitivity.

Metabolism and its effect on our perception of cold

Sensitivity to cold is usually a sign of an underlying health problem and can be caused by various factors. One common cause is insufficient physical activity, which can affect the body's metabolism. Other causes include malnutrition, e.g. a vegetarian or vegan diet with a lack of certain micronutrients such as iron and B12 or vitamin D. Hormone balance also plays a role, as a lack of certain hormones leads to shivering when a person is exposed to low temperatures. Anyone who feels unusually cold should see their doctor and have themselves checked.

Sensitivity to cold is a common problem where many factors play a role. The increased radiation of body heat at low weight in relation to body surface area can cause people to be colder than their heavier counterparts. Weight loss, e.g. through intermittent fasting, can also reduce a person's body heat. This phenomenon is often overlooked and not widely discussed, but researching the causes can lead to solutions. By activating your metabolism in a sensible way, e.g. through ginger shots or other methods. This will keep you warm and active even on cold winter days.

Ginger shot recipe

Ginger shots are a perfect pick-me-up to get the day going. Ginger and apple together make an energizing juice, but how do you make it?

In recipes for ginger shots, a ratio of 1:5 between ginger and apple is often recommended. For example, if you use 40g of ginger (an almost thumb-length tuber), you will need 200g of apple (a standard apple). Both should be processed with the peel, i.e. no peeling is required.

The finished juice should be tangy and can even be stored in the fridge for up to a few days if necessary. If a juicer is not an option, you can also simply mix 200 ml of cloudy apple juice with 40 g of grated ginger.

Drink 1-3 ginger shots of 70-80 ml (approx. espresso cup) per day. However, always make sure that you are feeling well. Not everyone tolerates ginger equally well. In the first few days, you can increase the dosage up to six ginger shots. However, you should always bear in mind that experts recommend taking a break of one week to 10 days after three weeks. We hope you enjoy your winter warming drink!
